At first, self-employment may seem like the epitome of minimalism: you replaced the distraction of a traditional job with a passion you’ve intentionally dedicated your life to, and are (hopefully!) earning enough to minimize the distraction of financial concerns. However, with the newly-earned title of entrepreneur, one now has to lure clients and win over customers, which may at first seem daunting if you desire to stay true to your minimalist principals.
Business traditions long ago set our society’s expectations for traditional ways of meeting, developing relations, and ultimately transacting business with clients. Unfortunately for minimalists, these norms are oftentimes the very opposite of our values, particularly in the sense that minimalist philosophy dictates we should reduce our consumption and eliminate extravagant costs. Out the door goes the fancy dinner and expensive night on the town to sway a new corporate account executive, bank loan officer, or high-end client.
How then does a minimalist entrepreneur succeed in the cut-throat world of modern business? Laura let’s us in on her secret: “Stay true to yourself. People are not buying your “product,” they are buying you and your way of life.” The most-fulfilled and passionate entrepreneurs are those who both transact business and enjoy their personal lives in accordance with the same values. You can help yourself and your business by closing any disparity between the values you hold dear in your personal life and those that guide your business. Doing so will result in more job satisfaction and higher energy levels which will inevitably translate to a higher degree of business success.
Laura further advises us on satisfying customers and influencing their lives in accordance with our minimalist values: customers “WANT to be shown how to live life to the fullest without the burden of being a part of the societal norm.” These words inspire; entrepreneurs are leaders with the power to influence customers’ lives for the better! Customers want to feel part of your passion-driven life, they want to share in your success, and they yearn to be inspired by your originality. I challenge the entrepreneurs reading this to evaluate how you are interacting with your clients. Are you sharing your story and passions with them, are they motivated by your desire to fully live life, and are you showing them how they can succeed in doing so too?
In direct parallels to the minimalist movement itself, the next generation of business leaders are breaking away from the mold, innovating their organizations and industries to not only serve their own financial needs, but to truly add value to the world. What a great time to be an entrepreneur, true to your values, leading your customers to a better life!
